My two Old-Time Scotch Collies, Lennox and Maisie, live on our 10 acres alongside our ducks, chickens, and farm cats. These blogs cover everything I’ve learned while training our dogs to poultry and homestead life.
When people hear about working farm dogs, they often assume the dog has one job: herding, guarding, vermin control, etc. Farm collies (like my dogs), however, are heritage breeds that were meant to have multiple jobs on small homesteads and farms. Through my experiences, I’ve learned that means they also need a different training approach.
I’m not a professional dog trainer. But I have thoroughly enjoyed refining my approach to training as I’ve learned more about multi-purpose farm dogs. Even if you don’t have a farm-type collie, I believe this approach can help you discover your dog’s strengths—instead of suppressing them. Your dog may already be a multi-purpose farm dog just waiting to be recognized!
